Premise:

An horror anthology series from many of the greatest horror film writers and directors currently in the business.

News: (01/20/06) - According to The New York Times, Showtime has decided not to air "Imprint," directed by Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike. The episode was scheduled to air on Jan. 27, but will be replaced by "Haeckel's Tale." All references to "Imprint" have been removed from the Showtime Web site.

The newspaper reported that "Imprint" goes too far. "I think it's amazing, but it's even hard for me to watch," series creator Mick Garris said. "It's definitely the most disturbing film I've ever seen." The episode will be released directly to DVD through IDT's home-video subsidiary, Anchor Bay Entertainment. The DVD will be released in Fall 2006.

In a press release Miike said: "To tell you the truth, I was not surprised to hear that 'Imprint' would not air. Through the experience of directing this episode, I have discovered that while humor can have its limits, fear has no limits. I could not suppress the volume of terror that this film conveys."

"Imprint" is based on the novel "Bokkee Kyoutee." The episode is about a American journalist (Billy Drago) in mid-19th-century Japan searching for a love he left behind. He discovers a dark island zoned exclusively for brothels. There he spends the night with a hideously deformed, nameless woman (Youki Kudoh) who tells terrible stories.

(10/28/05) - Executive producer Andrew Deane spoke to SCI FI Wire about the upcoming first episode of Masters of Horror. The one-hour mini-movie "Incident on and off a Mountain Road" is directed by Phantasm's Don Coscarelli and is based on the short story by Joe Lansdale. The script by Coscarelli and Stephen Romano pits a young woman against Moonface, a deformed and demented serial killer.

Coscarelli is one of 13 well-known horror directors who were given total creative freedom by Showtime. The only limitation is the 10-day shooting schedule and a limited budget. Each of the 13 mini-movies are "definitely stand-alone, separate one-hour films," Deane said in an interview. "Week to week, film to film, filmmaker to filmmaker, each week is an entirely ... separate, unique film. Story, subject, tonally, direction: Everything is very unique. It's really a John Carpenter film, a Tobe Hooper film, a [Joe Dante] film. ... We're able to cover a large spectrum of what horror is."

Upcoming mini-films/episodes: Carpenter's "Cigarette Burns," about a man who is searching for a rare print of a film that may just drive people insane; Dario Argento's "Jenifer," starring Steven Weber in the tale of a modern-day Lolita who destroys the bodies and souls of men; and Mick Garris' "Chocolate," about a young man who finds his body inhabited by the perfect woman.
