Premise:

A drama series that follows the Girardi family, a typical family facing not so typical situations. Spirited 16 year old Joan Girardi starts receiving unexpected visits from God, in the form of different people. Questioning her sanity, she follows God’s cryptic messages, while trying to maintain a “normal” teenager life. Joan’s dad Will Girardi is the new chief of police of Arcadia and must deal with a serious outbreak of crime. Rounding out the rest of Joan’s family is her mother, Helen, her 15-year-old science-geek brother, Luke, and her older brother, Kevin, a former high-school sports star who is in a wheelchair as a result of a car accident.

News: (05/18/05) - CBS announced on Wednesday, May 18, that Joan of Arcadia will not return for a third season.

(05/04/05) - Executive producer Stephen Nathan told TV Guide Online about a new character with dark tendencies, "[Ryan Hunter, played by Wentworth Miller,] is like a fallen angel," Nathan told the site. "He feels more powerful than God. We decided to introduce the idea at the end of this season to show what we will do if—and hopefully when—we come back next fall."

The site also reported that Hunter, a 30-year-old multimillionaire who can talk with God, just like Joan, will taunt her by desecrating a church and buying an interest in the newspaper where her brother Kevin works.

(1/31/05) - Amber Tamblyn told TV Guide Online that she is not happy about the direction the supernatural series has taken in its second season. In December, Tamblyn met with producers to push them to take the show in a darker direction. Currently, the series has 8.4 million viewers a week this season, down from 10 million last season.

"Joan is digressing," Tamblyn, 21, told the site. "Joan is backtracking. Joan is more confused. She learns something in [one] episode, but then she seems to redo [her mistakes] in another, so she never seems to learn anything. I'm not really sure where the growth is."

"Joan's life is tough. Her reactions are not as hard as they should be. I want to see her more challenged. The producers know how I feel."

Executive producer Stephen Nathan told TV Guide Online, "The reality is that we are a family show, and we have been getting a lot of critical praise this season, even though the numbers have wavered. ... Creative differences between producers and actors on a series is the norm, and we think Amber is a phenomenal talent."

(7/16/04) Joan of Arcadia has been nominated for three awards (for the 56th Annual Prime-Time Emmy Awards), including outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actress in a drama (Amber Tamblyn) and outstanding guest actress in a drama (Louise Fletcher).

(01/20/04) CBS announced over the weekend that Joan of Arcadia has been renewed for a full second season.

Joan of Arcadia won the People's Choice Awards for Favorite New Dramatic Series.

Amber Tamblyn has been nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama television series. The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 25, 2004 airing live on NBC.

TV Guide Online reported that Joan of Arcadia and Alias were among the picks of the American Film Institute for the top 10 shows of 2003.
