News:

(03/29/06) - Brad Kern, executive producer of Charmed, recently spoke to SCI FI Wire about why he didn't ask original cast member Shannen Doherty to join other returning actors for the upcoming series finale.

"There are a lot of issues, mostly internal and financial, as to why we didn't ask Shannen back." He said in an interview, "Prue's memory will be kept [alive] and be honored, but we didn't ask Shannen to come back. ... The show is more about the sisters who are here, not the one who's not."

Julian McMahon (Cole Turner) will also not be returning for the finale. "He did return for the 150th episode, and that was very cool," said Holly Marie Combs (Piper Halliwell). "We all enjoyed it."

"He told us that he would love to come back for the 200th episode, but we never quite got there." When asked about Doherty, Combs rolled her eyes and said: "Well, that's a whole other show."

So, who will be back? The sisters' grandmother and mom (Penny and Patty), the "future Chris" and others will be returning for the wedding of Phoebe (Alyssa Milano). "In one scene we will have 12 characters," Kern said. "The director is going crazy trying to figure out how to shoot it."

Brian Krause (Leo) will also be returning after being cut out of most of this season. "I don't really understand the reasoning about cutting my character, when they put other characters in that cost just as much or more, but I'm glad to be here for the end," Krause said.

"I get teary-eyed just talking about it," Milano said. "We're all pretty emotional. It's been such a big part of our lives."

Kern added that there is no spin-off show planned and he hopes the fans will be satisfied with the finale. "It's a valentine to the fans that we will get all of the favorite characters we could afford to come back for the last episode," Kern said. "It will include family from the past and also future generations to show that the life of Charmed will go on, even if it's not on TV."

(03/08/06) - A WB spokesman confirmed to TV Guide, on March 3, that Charmed is ending with the current eighth season. The final episode will air on May 21.

(10/21/05) - According to the New York Daily News, Rose McGowan (Paige) was handcuffed and kicked out of a party for the T-Mobile cellular service on Oct. 18 in Hollywood, Calif., after doing something with her keys which caused security guards to surround her.

Dominique Appel, Rose McGowan's representative, spoke to the paper about the incident. "There was a man standing uncomfortably close to her," Appel said. "When she asked him to move away, words were exchanged. It happened he was a security guard. She was handcuffed and taken outside." Appel said that McGowan "was detained," but that the police were never called.

(09/22/05) - Executive producer Brad Kern told SCI FI Wire that he believes they've created a series with "a canvas that seems to be infinite."

"We can paint whatever picture we want to paint," Kern said. "We can go anywhere we want to go. But it really does start with the characters and the stars, because they are real women, and they are real sisters. At least that's the way we portray them. And they grow up, and as they grow up they experience different things in their lives. Certainly different, 23 versus 30. And that opens up the door for new metaphors and new demons to resonate and challenge them in their next stages of life."

"We'll have done 178 episodes [by the end of the season]," Kern said. "It's such lofty territory, [especially for] genre shows in prime time. I feel like I've got a nose bleed [laughs]. I think that obviously it's a challenge coming out of the season finale, which was designed in part to be a series finale, in case we weren't going to come back. Because we have come back, it has created some challenges for us. The one thing I know we don't want to do, and we're not going to do, is get out that cheaply or easily."

In the seventh-season finale, the sisters ended up having to fake their deaths to the demon and the mortal world. As the new season begins, Paige, Piper and Phoebe will continue to let the world believe that they are dead, Kern told Scifi Wire.

"And they should like it a lot better," he said. "I think that's going to open up more stories for us, because we're able to send the women out into the real world, for really the first time, full time, in seven years. But at the same time they're going to be challenged by what they see around them, which is bad things happening. Demons taking advantage of the Charmed Ones supposedly being gone. And how are they going to reconcile that while they live their own individual lives? How can they pretend like it doesn't matter? How can they watch bad things happen and do nothing about it? Yet if they decide to do something about it, then they risk losing the very thing that they've wanted, which is normal lives."

This season will see the addition of a new character named Billie (Kaley Cuoco). Billie is "kind of a brash thrill-seeker, a 19-year-old kick-ass witch, who they're going to end up reluctantly recruiting," Kern said. He added that it is time for the girls to "pass the baton off, or at least attempt to pass the baton off. It's not going to be an easy baton pass to this new character."

(7/21/05) - No official announcement yet, but it looks like the Season 3 DVD set will be released on November 15.

(06/29/05) - According to Variety. Kaley Cuoco (8 Simple Rules, 10.5) is joining the cast of Charmed in its upcoming eighth season. Cuoco will play a young witch under the tutelage of the Charmed ones. In addition to Cuoco, the upcoming eighth season will feature Mark McGrath (lead singer for the rock group Sugar Ray) for a multiepisode arc.

(05/17/05) - It's official! The WB has confirmed that it has renewed Charmed for an eighth season. The WB made the announcement as part of its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City on May 17. McGrath, lead singer for the rock group Sugar Ray and current co-host of the entertainment news program Extra, will become a regular for most of the new season. Charmed will retain its current timeslot, Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

(05/16/05) - According to thefutoncritic.com and televisionwithoutpity.com, the WB has leaked that Charmed will be renewed for an eighth season. No official announcement yet, but the WB will officially announce the Fall 2005 shows on Tuesday May 17th.

(04/20/05) - Brad Kern, executive producer of Charmed, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming season finale, "Something Wicca This Way Goes?" could also serve as the series finale, with a big surprise, if the show is not renewed. The finale will build on the events of "Death Becomes Them."

"The girls (Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan) have to figure out how to get the book back before Zankou (Oded Fehr) can use it to be able to tap into the power of the spiritual nexus and then become unstoppable," Kern told Scifi Wire. "Over the course of the episode the girls have to wrestle with whether the fight has been worth it, whether they want to carry on or not, what they're willing to give up."

"But they also realize that if they don't stop Zankou then all of the good they've done over the past seven years will have been for naught. That's just not acceptable, but the more they try to stop him, one by one he takes their powers. Halfway through the show they end the act by saying, 'I don't think we're going to get out of this one alive.' And that sets up a surprising ending that is so surprising and so top-secret that even in the episode outline that I've sent to the studio and the network, I've not included that scene. It will only be distributed on the day we shoot it. The idea is to not let spoilers spoil things for the loyal fans."

The WB will announce in May whether Charmed will be renewed for another season.

(01/21/05) - This may be the last season of Charmed. Recently executive producer Brad Kern spoke to Scifi Weekly about the possible series finale.

"Honestly, if I don't know by the end of February I'm going to write a series finale, and if they pick up the show late, I'll have to worry about how to get out of it next year," Kern said. "But I cannot, in good conscience, not do a series finale for the fans. I'm beholden to them. We all are. Seven years is a long time, a huge commitment on their part. So if I haven't heard from [the network] by the end of February I'm writing a series finale, and if we're lucky enough to do an eighth season I'll figure out how to get out of it."

(08/18/04) - According to E! Online, Charisma Carpenter (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will guest-star in at least two episodes of Charmed next season. The first episode is scheduled to air Sept. 26th.
